Overcome Your Fear: 5 Steps to Become More Confident

Punita Shah

Self-confidence is the belief in yourself. It is your ability to trust your abilities.

The reason for lack of self-confidence can almost always be summed up in one word: fear. This could be fear of embarrassment, fear of rejection, fear of criticism, fear of failure, or one of many other kinds.
Fortunately, all fears are learned. No one is born with fears. Fears can, therefore, be unlearned by practicing self-discipline repeatedly with regards to fear until it goes away and one becomes more confident to face any challenges.

Want to overcome your fears and be more confident? What is the difference between a person who is confident and one who is not?

Self-confident people confront their fears and overcome all obstacles in life. When one is confident, he/she tends to take life on a positive note, regardless of how things are going in their lives.

Everyone has certain fears and we all face obstacles, but the secret to success lies in being able to beat them and achieve what is desired. The lack of confidence can hold you from pursuing their dreams.
However, you can work on enhancing your self-confidence and self-esteem issues and become surer of yourself. Only you can make yourself be confident.

Here are five steps that will help you be confident and pursue your dreams:

1. Making a Positive Frame of Mind
By definition, your state of mind is the mood you are in at a particular time. While it can change from positive to negative based on certain life events, it shouldn’t change drastically from day to day during everyday life. Learning to stay away from negativity is the key to become more self-confident. This means staying away from the people who put you down and the thoughts that have the potential to shred your confidence. Spending time with people who are positive and instil a sense of positivity in you can help become more self-confidence as you’ll hear positive outlooks, positive stories and positive affirmations from them. Their positive words will sink in and affect your own line of thinking.

Here is how you can stay in a positive frame of mind:

ü  By controlling negative thoughts,

Negative thinking contributes to anxiety in social and performance situations
It’s not bad to doubt yourself sometimes, but do not let those thoughts take over the positive ones.

ü  Use positive language when interacting with people.
Language is a powerful tool as what you speak is governed by how you feel.

ü  Worrying is natural, but do not let your worries take over your feelings.
In order to stay confident, you need to control your worries.

2. Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses
Every individual is different, and functions differently based on the personalities. It is important to know yourself and your capacities. Do not depend on others to point out your strengths and weaknesses. Get to know yourself well instead. You can become a lot more confident by overcoming your weaknesses and trusting your capabilities.

Make a list of the things that you are good at and enjoy doing, and another list of the things where you need improvement. As you turn your weaknesses into your strengths, you experience a sense of fulfilment and you’ll gradually be confident. Instead of trying to hold down people who do better than you, try learning from them. Do not take failure too seriously, but as an opportunity to do even better the next time.

3. Manage Your Life and Balance the Time
In an age of 24/7 connectivity, achieving work-life balance is more challenging than ever. You tend to lose confidence when you are unable to achieve your goals (whether at work or in your personal life). Poor time management leads to stress and the more stressed you are, the likelihood of negativity taking a toll on you increases. Set work hours for yourself and do everything in your power to stick to them
Keep some extra time in hand, just in case you take a few more minutes to complete a certain task. Make sure to stick to the routine but keep some time for relaxation.

As you start achieving your goals on a regular basis, your confidence will boost automatically.

4. Enjoy Taking Risks
Occasionally, taking risk leads us to try new experiences or to learn new skills. Many of life’s greatest achievements require going outside of your comfort zone. It is not failure that crushes our confidence, but the inability to get back on the saddle that makes us feel less confident.

Stepping out of your comfort zone helps you learn new things, acquire new skills and face new challenges, making you feel confident. You get the feeling that you can do and achieve anything, regardless of how harsh the conditions are.

5. Empower Yourself
The general meaning of Self-empowerment is taking control of our own life, setting goals, and making positive choices. Empowerment is the belief that you can control the course of your life. People who don’t feel empowered may have low self-esteem, feel unmotivated to go after goals and stop working toward happiness in their lives. Meditation is also an effective way to get rid of negative energy and bring in positivity.

Conclusion
Life is full of challenges, but you cannot afford to sit back and take life too seriously. You need to overcome and erase your fears. Not everyone is born confident, but one can surely work towards becoming more confident.

With the right mindset, you can easily be confident to achieve your dreams and become successful in life.
